Partner and Head, Sports and Media Andy Lem was quoted in the Edge Singapore article titled ‘World Cup Woes’

Jun 18, 2018

Eversheds Harry Elias Partner and Head, Sports and Media Andy Lem was quoted in the Edge Singapore article titled ‘World Cup Woes’. The article was first published in the print version of the Edge Singapore June 18, 2018 edition.

World Cup Woes

In an age of on-demand entertainment, the quadrennial international football tournament can still command a sizeable audience. Yet, broadcasters such as Mediacorp, Singtel and Starhub are no closer at figuring out how to make money from screening matches. What does that mean for the telcos and their customers?

So, did Singtel choose to team up with Starhub and Mediacorp this time around because of its 2014 experience? Or have prices escalated so much that the country’s largest telco felt it could not afford to do it alone? Is sporting content perhaps not the big customer draw it once was?

Andy Lem, a partner at law firm Eversheds Harry Elias, says socio- economic factors are likely to play a part. For example, he says, the Singapore market has shown that it has a huge appetite for football because of the large sums that are paid for the Englisg Premier League broadcast rights.
