International Arbitration Partner Shaun Leong a contributing author to the 2020 edition of the Singapore Civil Procedure once again

Feb 3, 2020

Eversheds Harry Elias is once again pleased that Shaun Leong, our Partner with the International Arbitration practice group, is a contributing author to the 2020 edition of the Singapore Civil Procedure for the chapters on International Arbitration and the Singapore International Commercial Court (SICC). Shaun was also a contributing writer to the 2019 edition of the book, which is typically referred to as the “White Book”.

Prior to working several years as an arbitration specialist with arbitration practices in offshore magic circle law firms, Shaun was a Magistrate and Assistant Registrar at the Supreme Court of Singapore where he handled commercial disputes and international arbitration cases. He has also worked on the establishment of the SICC as Secretariat to the SICC Committee and was involved in the formulation of the rules and procedure of the SICC.

To this day, Shaun remembers fondly of how the White Book featured in his time at the Supreme Court:

“When I was serving as magistrate and assistant registrar at the Supreme Court of Singapore, civil procedure was essentially my bread and butter, with the White Book a trusty companion we always take along for our hearings. I learnt very quickly that in so many ways, form can indeed be as important as substance, and there are real procedural tactics that can be employed to bring forth determinative outcomes in cases. Having a refined understanding of the rules of procedure goes beyond merely knowing what the rules say and do, to employing strategic impetus around those rules to protect procedural rights, especially in the face of potential abuse of process.”

Indeed, the White Book is widely known as an authoritative text on civil procedure and a staple for legal practitioners involved in disputes proceedings. The 2020 edition is now published and available for order.
